Prize 1

Crolla Amato Gadda Prize. Authors and publishers may enter works on Carlo Emilio Gadda published between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2011. Book-length monographs, commented editions, translations, substantial book chapters and journal articles are eligible. Works in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish are eligible.

Closing date: 31 March 2012

Prize 2

Gadda First. Authors and publishers may enter a first work on Carlo Emilio Gadda. This must be either a submitted Doctoral Thesis or a published first work with a submission / publication date between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2011. Book-length monographs, commented editions, translations, substantial book chapters and journal articles are eligible. Works in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish are eligible. Authors must be 35 or under by the closing date.

Prize 3

Novecento in Saggio. Authors and publishers may enter book-length monographs, critical works and commented editions on one or more 20thC Italian creative prose writers. Submissions must have a publication date between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2011. Works in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish are eligible. Edited works and conference proceedings are not eligible.

Prize 4

Scottish Gadda Juniors. Stage 1. Closing date: 15 May 2012. Creative Writing and Other Media Competition open to secondary schools (S4, S5, S6) in Edinburgh and Glasgow. In the first selection schools and individuals may submit short detective stories or dialogues for the stage. Entries must be written in English, be no more than 2,000 words long and detect-discover-explore Italy through the setting. This may be understood in the broadest sense, and entries set, for instance, in the Italian communities outside Italy, e.g., in Scotland or in the UK more generally, are eligible and welcome, as they will complement our research and public engagement projects in Italian Diaspora Studies (Benedetti Scholarships Project and Di Ciacca Postdoctoral Fellowship). The Junior Semifinalists will be announced on 1 June 2012. The Junior Semifinalists Workshop will follow at the end of June. The Junior Finalists will be announced on that occasion.

Stage 2. Closing date: 1 August 2012. Stage 2 of the Competition, Other media, is open to the Scottish Junior Finalists only. Stage 2 submissions may consist in one of the following: photo porfolio (max 5 photos), film (max 3 mins), 1 event poster, 1 book cover illustration, 1 installation (submitted through photo portfolio, max 5 photos, or film, max 3 mins). Other Media submissions must develop the detecting Italy angle of the written submission. Poster submissions based on the written submission must be pitched for an Edinburgh Gadda Prize event. Similarly, book cover illustrations must be pitched for a real commission and attempt to connect the written submission to the general prize themes (detective genre, detecting Italy, communities, italian communities outside Italy, story-telling, junior entrants, other media). Stage 2 entries must be submitted on DVD and sent by post to the address given in the Registration page. The Scottish Junior Winners will be announced at the Prize Award Ceremony on 22 September 2012.

Prize 4 – Edinburgh University Only

Scottish Gadda Juniors. Edinburgh University Year 1 students only may enter the newest pilot initiative of the Prize. Prize 4 Rules, submission modes, closing dates, timeline and award procedures apply.

Overall Timeline – All Prizes

Entries for Prizes 1-3 must be received by 31 March 2012. Stage 1 entries for Prize 4 must be received by 15 May 2012. The Junior Semifinalists will be announced on 1 June 2012. The Junior Workshop will take place at the end of June (date to be announced). The Junior Finalists will be announced on that occasion. The 9 Winners of Prizes 1-3 will be announced on 30 June 2012. Stage 2 submissions (Other Media) must be received by 1 August 2012. The Scottish Junior Winners will be announced at the Traverse Theatre on 22 September 2012 as part of the Award Ceremony for all prize categories.

General Exclusions

Prizes 1-3. Authors and publishers may enter more than one title per prize, but cannot enter the same work in more than one prize. Members of the Edinburgh Gadda Prize Committee and Panel Judges are excluded from entering the Prize, and so are Previous Winners. Members of the EJGS Editorial Board and of the EJGS Editing Team are not excluded.

Registration

Prizes 1-3. Authors and publishers must send their work by the closing date. Submissions must be sent in the required number of copies to the addresses indicated in the Registration page. By the closing date authors and publishers must also submit the registration form electronically and pay the registration fee. This can be done either through our secure e-pay system or by cheque.

Prize 4. Stage 1. Entrants must send their work to Scottish Juniors Submissions as a pdf attachment and submit the registration form electronically by the closing date. Stage 2. Finalists must send their Other Media submissions on DVD and by post to the address indicated in the Registration page by the closing date.

Registration Fee

Prizes 1-3. A registration fee of £25 (GBP) applies.
Prize 4. There is no registration fee.

Judging Panels

The Panels’ decisions are final and cannot be appealed. The Panels may decide to award special mention status to one or more meritorious entries. They may also decide to award no Prize if they consider that the candidacies presented do not justify its attribution.

Notification

Only prize winners and those who have been awarded a special mention will be notified. This will be done by email and on this webpage.

Award Ceremony Attendance

Prize winners are expected to attend the Award Ceremony.

Scholarly Prizes

The 3 overall Winners of Prizes 1-3 will receive a diploma, book prizes and a cheque for £500. In the same categories, the Runners-up, i.e., second place and third place, and any Special Mentions will receive a diploma, book prizes and a cheque for £300 (second and third place) and £200 (special mentions). In all cases, the sum is only awarded as a contribution toward travel and accommodation expenses incurred by the Winners to attend the Award Ceremony in Edinburgh. All categories of Winners, including Spetial Mentions, will also receive up to 3 complimentary event registrations and tickets. If Winners cannot attend the Award Ceremony, the diploma and the book prizes will be sent by post.

Junior Prizes

The Scottish Junior Semifinalists will receive dilpomas and book prizes as part of the second Scottish Juniors Lab (June 2012). They will also receive complimentary event registrations and tickets for the later events in September.

As well as receiving diplomas and book prizes, the Scottish Junior Winners will take part in International Gadda Juniors, together with the Winners of Gadda Giovani 2011, producing a Multimedia Exhibition-Performance based on the junior submissions which will be part of the Edinburgh 2012 events programme. The overall Winner and the Runner-up of Scottish Gadda Juniors will win a travel bursary (£500) to attend Gadda Giovani Montecassino 2013.

Return Policy

The works submitted will not be returned.
