Junior Prize | Gadda Giovani
The Prize in Brief
Gadda Giovani takes the Edinburgh Gadda Prize to Italy. The prize is open to secondary schools in six Italian regions Gadda wrote extensively about – Abruzzo, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Lombardy, Molise and Sardinia – leading to regional and national finals. Public events consist in workshops in creative writing, other media and performance in which hosts work with finalists to a set of tasks based on the theme of the awards: Detecting Italy.

Montecassino 2013 opened with a reception at the Residence of HM Ambassador Christopher Prentice, Villa Wolkonsky. As part of the Awards at the Abbey of Montecassino, Sunday 5 May 2013, Nicola Benedetti, Fabrizio Gifuni and Alexei Grynyuk delighted our audience joining us for an evening of workshops, recital, readings and installations.
Montecassino 2013 exploited synergies between our junior and scholarly projects, Detecting Italy and No-Where-Next. Further intersections came through an exhibition of photographs of Cassino and Montecassino 1946-1947 among installations by our junior finalists. This gave us the perfect context for the Italian launch of the Italo-Scottish Research Cluster, following its inauguration at the Scottish Parliament on 16 April 2013. The exhibition catalogue and the first volume of the new series Detecting Italy. La narrativa ultraesordiente del Gadda Giovani were presented as part of the events programme.
The Montecassino installations and various other Gadda Giovani exhibits including books, posters and T-shirts travelled on to the Venice Biennale Fringe, where they remained on display at the Rolak Gallery, Giudecca, from 29 May to 31 August 2013. The Montecassino Winners were re-uninted for a Gadda Giovani Special hosted by Pordenonelegge, 20 September 2014.
