The Vittoria Group Scholarship 2012

Applications are invited for the Vittoria Group Scholarship in Gadda Studies. The Scholarship, which is generously sponsored by the Vittoria Group Edinburgh, will support one Master by Research Programme in Gadda Studies at Edinburgh University in the academic year 2012-2013 covering registration fees of up to £5,750.

The Nicola Benedetti Scholarships

The Vittoria Group Scholarship is the second Master Scholarship to be created as part of the Nicola Benedetti Scholarship Fund. Established in 2010, the Fund supports Masters, PhDs and Postdoctoral Fellowships in Italian Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Italian Studies at Edinburgh

Italian is part of the School of Literatures Languages and Cultures, Division of European Languages and Cultures, and is the home of the Edinburgh Journal of Gadda Studies and the Edinburgh Gadda Prize. Through a rich interdisciplinary approach to research and teaching which includes the visual arts, music, literature, history and philosophy, the Department encourages its students to explore the fundamental Italian-ness of European culture from the Early Modern period to the present and contributes to cross-School courses in Cultural Studies, Literary Theory, Political Theory, Migration Studies, Gender Studies and Translation Studies.

Gadda Studies at Edinburgh

Established in 2000, the Edinburgh Gadda Journal has since become the third most popular web resource in our College and has made Edinburgh the premier centre for the promotion of Gadda Studies worldwide. The Edinburgh Gadda Prize was established in 2010, in the EJGS Decennial, to provide a further international platform for the subject. il Gaddus Scholars is being launched this year, as part of Edinburgh 2012, following the success of Gadda Giovani 2011.

The recipient of the Scholarship will become an active member of the Edinburgh Gadda Team and will work with Professor Pedriali on the fourth edition of the Edinburgh Gadda Prize, Montecassino 2013, which will combine Gaddus Scholars, the Italo-Scottish Diaspora Initiative and Gadda Giovani under the title No-Where-Next / War-Diaspora-Origin.

Research proposal

We welcome proposals in any area of Gadda Studies, in any combinations with other subjects and disciplines. Enquiries regarding proposals may be made directly to Professor Federica Pedriali.

Eligibility

Applicants must have a first class degree in Italian Studies or be in the final year of study for their first degree. In the latter case, one of the two referees will have to state the expected results. Prefereed specialism: 19th and 20th century Italian culture. Applicants must be proficient in both Italian and English. Non-native speakers of English will have to meet the language entry requirements for postgraduate study at Edinburgh.

Applicants must ask two referees to send their references directly to Vittoria Group Application by the closing date. References should comment on the quality of the research proposal as well as on the qualifications of the applicant.

Please note: The successful candidate will be required to clear admission procedures by applying for a Master by Research programme following the award of the Scholarship. Separate instructions regarding this application will be given upon notification of the award.
