What a brilliant idea it was for the Italian Department at Edinburgh University to organise a writing contest for the city’s secondary schools! I was delighted to chair the first Junior Gadda Prize in 2011. We held a day long writing workshop for everyone who’d submitted their 2,000-word mystery story set in Rome. The participants learned about thriller writing from best selling author Denise Mina and got the chance to hear their stories read aloud by Bafta winning actress Daniela Nardini. We were especially pleased that the contest had stimulated a lot of young people who had never tried writing fiction before. Molto bene!!
