The format of the Gadda week worked really well as events such as the inaugural lecture and the show fed off each other effectively. I found Thursday’s lecture especially helpful as preparation for the theatre show, having come from a position of knowing next to nothing about Gadda and his legacy, and also because I am not a speaker of the Italian language.
It was interesting to get a feel for the ideas behind the project rather than just the historical facts. Also, some elements of the play helped to illustrate some of the concepts discussed at the lecture, so I think that both events worked well for me in tandem.
I did find some of the show was lost in translation for me, but that was nothing to do with the event or the production – it’s a common problem with surtitled shows in that you are slightly behind the action and trying to digest one load of information when the next lot is upon you, ultimately it’s more incentive for me to learn the language!
Sadly I wasn’t able to stay for the post-show discussion which I think would have been really interesting and would have helped fill in some of the gaps in my own understanding, but for me personally I felt this event was a good place to start, it has definitely set my mind off in various directions.
All in all I thought the event format worked really well and I would definitely be interested in attending more events of this type.
